# How to Automatically Reply to Thumbtack Leads

How to automatically reply to Thumbtack leads: connect your Thumbtack Pro account to a tool that uses Thumbtack’s official messaging API, then write the first message it should send. Thumbtack’s own AI drafts and quick replies still wait for you to tap Send. Auto-Respond replies to every supported Thumbtack lead in under 2 seconds, then follows up on your schedule until the customer replies or books.

Thumbtack also sells Front Desk, a paid service that sends your first message for you. Below: each option Thumbtack gives you, which leads to automate and which to keep, the setup steps, and what a good first reply says.

## What Thumbtack gives you to reply faster

Thumbtack has several built-in ways to shorten your reply time. Only one of them sends a message without you, and it is a paid service.

| Option | What it does | Sends without you? |
| -------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | ------------------------------ |
| Notifications | The Thumbtack Pro app alerts you by push or text when a customer reaches out | No |
| AI reply draft | When you tap Reply on a new lead, Thumbtack prepares a message from the customer’s request | No, you edit it and tap Send |
| Quick replies | Up to 100 saved messages, each under 500 characters, that you insert and personalize | No |
| Front Desk | Thumbtack’s automated lead response service sends the first message you customized every time you get a lead | Yes, as a monthly subscription |
| Partner integrations | Linked business tools receive your Thumbtack leads; a few also send and receive messages | Only with 2-way messaging |
| Pro integrations API | Real-time message webhooks and an endpoint that posts a message inside a lead | Yes, for connected tools |

Two details matter when you compare these. First, Front Desk is set up on a phone call with Thumbtack’s team, changes to your messages go through a request form, and Thumbtack states that Front Desk does not call customers. Second, Thumbtack splits partner tools into 1-way messaging (you see the message in the partner tool but answer in Thumbtack) and 2-way messaging (you send and receive from the partner tool). An automatic reply needs the 2-way kind.

## Why a fast reply matters on Thumbtack

On Thumbtack the money is spent before you type a word. A lead that matches your job preferences is charged automatically when it arrives, so every slow reply is a paid lead at risk.

Thumbtack ties speed to visibility too. Its help center says your response rate affects your rank in customers’ search results, and that acting on every lead, even one you turn down, counts toward your response time. Its messaging guide asks pros to aim for a reply inside four hours between 8am and 8pm local time, and adds that sooner is better. Watch for the **Only picked you** label: that customer has not contacted any other pro yet.

Outside Thumbtack, the research points the same way. Harvard Business Review’s 2011 study of online leads found that contacting a lead within the first hour made it about 7x more likely to qualify than contacting it an hour later ([HBR, “The Short Life of Online Sales Leads”](https://hbr.org/2011/03/the-short-life-of-online-sales-leads)). ## How to respond to Thumbtack leads faster without new software

Before you add a tool, tighten what Thumbtack already gives you. These steps cost nothing:

1. **Turn on notifications you will see.** In the Pro app go to Profile, the gear icon, then Notifications. Send text notifications to the phone you carry on jobs.
2. **Open the For you tab first.** Leads there came to you and are already paid for. Opportunities can wait.
3. **Save quick replies for your main job types.** Keep each one under 500 characters. In the app you can tap and hold a sent message and save it as a template.
4. **Use the AI draft as a starting point.** Fix the schedule or price line before you send it.
5. **Decline what you cannot do.** Tap Can’t do it so the customer keeps looking. It still counts as acting on the lead.
6. **Tighten your job preferences.** Every match is charged, so only match the work you want.

These habits shorten the gap, but each one still needs a person to see the alert and tap Send. When you are on a ladder or under a sink, that person is not available.

## How to set up an automatic reply to Thumbtack leads

With Auto-Respond, the connection runs through Thumbtack’s own sign-in, so you approve access on Thumbtack and your password is never shared.

1. **Add the source.** In Auto-Respond, open Sources and click Add Thumbtack.
2. **Authorize on Thumbtack.** Sign in with your Thumbtack Pro credentials and approve access to read inquiries and send replies for your Pro account. You return with the source marked Active. One Thumbtack Pro account is one source.
3. **Give the AI your business facts.** List your services, the area you cover, the price ranges you are willing to quote and the questions you need answered before a visit. The reply combines these with the customer’s request, including the service category they picked on Thumbtack.
4. **Choose AI or predefined messages.** The AI assistant writes a job-specific reply for each lead. Predefined messages send the text you wrote.
5. **Set follow-ups and timing.** Follow-ups run on your cadence, for example Day 1, Day 3 and Day 7, and stop the moment the customer replies or books. Your business-hours schedule applies to follow-ups only; the first reply is never held back by it.
6. **Connect the rest if you want it.** Calendar booking, a CRM, team alerts and a voice callback when the lead has a callable number.
7. **Read the first conversations.** Each lead appears on your Leads page with the full thread, and you can reply by hand at any time.

Setup takes under 2 minutes. Field-by-field details are in the [Thumbtack source docs](https://auto-respond.com/docs/lead-sources/thumbtack/).

## What the first automatic reply should say

Thumbtack’s own messaging guide gives the pattern: read the request, make it personal, answer what they asked and invite the next step. Its AI draft ends with one simple question. A good automatic reply follows the same shape in a few lines:

- **Name the job.** Repeat the service and the detail the customer gave, so they know a real business read it.
- **Answer the obvious question** when you have a rule for it: if you cover their area, or a price range you approved.
- **Ask one question** that moves toward a visit: photos, the address, or the best time.
- **Offer the next step:** an estimate slot or a call.

Here is a template written for illustration, for a water heater request:

> Hi \[first name], thanks for the details on the leaking water heater. We cover your ZIP code. Is the tank gas or electric, and about how old is it? With that I can offer you an inspection time.

Avoid three habits: quoting a price you never approved, sending the same paragraph to every job category, and asking for five things at once.

## What happens after the first reply

The first message only opens the door. Here is what a connected workflow does next:

- **The customer answers:** the AI keeps the conversation going inside your rules, asks your qualifying questions and offers a time when scheduling is on. Follow-ups stop.
- **The customer goes quiet:** follow-ups go out on your schedule and stop on a reply or a booking.
- **A callable number is available and voice is on:** the voice agent can call the lead instantly. See how the [Thumbtack voice agent](https://auto-respond.com/blog/thumbtack-voice-agent-call-leads/) handles that call.
- **You want to step in:** reply from the Leads page. A setting decides whether follow-ups continue after your own message.

## Which Thumbtack leads to automate, and which to keep

Not every Thumbtack job type needs an automatic first message. Thumbtack’s help center describes three:

| Type | How it reaches you | Automatic reply? |
| ------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------- |
| Leads (For you tab) | The customer chose you; the lead is charged when it arrives | Yes, this is where speed pays |
| Opportunities | Customers who contacted other pros; you choose which to quote, and you pay only if the customer responds | Keep these for yourself and use Thumbtack’s quote templates |
| Preset jobs | Pre-scheduled jobs you claim; a share of the job price is the fee | No message race; claim the ones that fit |

## What it costs to reply automatically

- **Auto-Respond:** $99/month per connected Thumbtack source, with a 7-day free trial. No contracts, no per-lead fees, no lead caps and no setup fees. The voice callback is optional: $10/month per number plus $1 per minute of talk time.
- **Front Desk:** a monthly subscription with two plans. Thumbtack lists the price range on its Front Desk help page and picks the plan with you on a call.
- **Your Thumbtack leads** are billed separately by Thumbtack. See [how much Thumbtack charges for leads](https://auto-respond.com/blog/thumbtack-cost-per-lead-2026/).

## Frequently asked questions

### Does Thumbtack have an automatic reply feature?

Thumbtack’s automatic option is Front Desk, a paid monthly service that sends your first message to every new lead. The free tools in the Pro app, the AI reply draft and quick replies, prepare a message faster, but you still review it and tap Send.

### Can I connect an auto responder to my Thumbtack account?

Yes. Thumbtack has a developer API for pro integrations and a partner program, and a connected tool works only after the account holder signs in on Thumbtack and approves access. Auto-Respond connects through that authorization flow, and your Thumbtack password is never shared with it.

### Will replying automatically improve my Thumbtack ranking?

Thumbtack says your response rate affects your rank in search results and that acting on each lead counts toward your response time. An instant reply helps that measure, but no tool can promise a higher position.

### Can an automatic reply quote prices on Thumbtack?

Only the price ranges you give it. Without approved ranges, the reply asks for the details needed to quote and offers an estimate or a call instead of a number.

### Does the automatic reply work at night and on weekends?

Yes. The first reply goes out whenever the lead arrives, day or night. Follow-ups respect the business-hours schedule you set, so customers are not messaged in the middle of the night unless you allow it.

### What happens when the customer answers the automatic reply?

Scheduled follow-ups stop the moment the customer replies or books. The AI continues the conversation within your instructions, and the full thread stays on your Leads page so you can step in at any time.
